Co Enzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is found in almost every cell of the body. It is a naturally occurring, fat-soluble antioxidant with a fundamental role in supporting cellular energy production.
Holland & Barrett stocks a range of CoQ10 capsules in packs of 30 to 250 capsules to suit your requirements.
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is a liposoluble compound found naturally in the energy producing centre of every cell - known as the mitochondria.
Co Enzyme Q10 was first isolated from bovine heart mitochondria in 1957, whilst its chemical structure was defined a year later. There are two forms of the compound: ubiquinone (oxidised form) and ubiquinol (reduced form).
CoQ10 and the Mitochondria
The importance of the compound becomes clear when you understand the role it plays within the mitochondria. The inner membrane of the mitochondria is where Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) production occurs, and CoQ10 is involved in this process. ATP is not only the major energy source of your cells, but also drives a number of biological processes.
CoQ10 acts as an essential molecule carrier which assists in the production of ATP. It also helps to stabilise the cell membrane, therefore preserving cellular integrity and function.
Sources of CoQ10
There are three main sources of CoQ10:
- Endogenous synthesis (made within the body)
- Food intake
- Supplement intake
Natural food sources include meat, fish, vegetables and dairy products. There are generally higher levels of the compound found in organ meats and oily fish than the other listed sources.
