The name Echinacea may come from the Greek word 'echinos' which is translated into 'hedgehog'. The plant has a spiky head, comparable to the small and prickly critter.
Echinacea is commonly known as the purple coneflower due to its unique appearance. The flower has either pink or purple petals with a purple or brown central cone. This central cone is a seed head which is comprised of sharp spines.
