Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a unique water soluble vitamin, as a small amount (2-5mg) can be stored in the liver for a number of years; this is rare for a water soluble vitamin.
Holland & Barrett stocks this vitamin in packs of 90, 100, and 250 tablets, available on the B Vitamins and B-Complex Vitamins pages.
What is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 originates from bacteria, fungi and algae and is present in the tissue of most animals. Plants can contain miniscule amounts from microbial contamination, but not in a form available for humans to consume.
Although it is a water soluble vitamin, the body is able to store it in the liver, with excess amounts being removed from the body through urination.
Vitamin B12 Intake
This B vitamin is attainable through a balanced diet, but vegetarians and vegans may have more difficulty reaching their Recommended Daily Allowance. It is suggested that adults consume 2.5mcg a day.
Eggs, meat, poultry, shellfish, milk, and milk products are all nutritional sources of the vitamin; although boiling milk may destroy most of it. Supplements are also available in caplet and tablet form, which can be useful for vegetarians and vegans.
Vitamin B12 Functions
Vitamin B12 has many functions in the body, all the way down to individual cells. Firstly, this vitamin contributes to normal energy metabolism by releasing energy from the food we eat. The vitamin also contributes to normal red blood cell formation and division, which is especially important during stages of fast growth and development.
Our bodies also rely on vitamin B12 to contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
