The evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis) is native to North America, but now grows in Europe and parts of the southern hemisphere too. The seeds of the evening primrose are of particular importance; oil is extracted from these for use in evening primrose oil capsules and beauty products.
Evening Primrose: The Wild Flower
The evening primrose itself is a wildflower. After the first year that it is planted, a circle of leaves grow close to the ground around its stems. After sunset between June and September, its yellow flowers bloom. This can also happen on overcast days during the second year of growth. The leaves grow on each side of the stem at alternating levels.
Evening Primrose Oil Supplements
Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which is an essential fatty acid. This type of fatty acid must be obtained from the diet as the body does not produce it itself. Holland & Barrett stock a variety of products from evening primrose capsules to evening primrose body lotions. Holland & Barrett Natural Evening Primrose Oil Capsules (1000mg) are one of our customers favourites. These capsules are also available in strengths of 500mg and 1300mg.
