What is Peppermint?

Originating from the peppermint plant (found in North America and Europe) peppermint oil exudes a distinctive, fresh minty aroma. Peppermint oil is a popular flavour, which is added to foods, drinks, soaps and cosmetics. It has also been used to treat and alleviate a variety of health conditions and their symptoms, particularly when consumed as a supplement or applied as a skin cream.

The Peppermint Plant

The peppermint plant is an herbaceous rhizomatous perennial plant that has the capacity to grow up to 90cm in length. Its leaves can grow up to 9cm long and 4cm wide, and are broad with a deep green colour. The flowers of the peppermint plant are usually a purple colour and are produced in spirals around the stalk. Upon its budding, the peppermint plant’s growth levels are exceptionally fast.

Uses of Peppermint

Peppermint has been used as a solution for various body disorders and problems. It can be used to relieve headaches by applying a few drops to a wrist cloth and inhaling the scent. The antibacterial and antiseptic nature of peppermint oil means that it can be used to cool the skin and address problems such as dandruff, by massaging the oil into the scalp as a body wash or lotion.

Also containing rosmarinic acid, peppermint has been linked to the reduction of inflammatory chemicals. It has also been used to treat stress due to its calming effect and soothing aroma, which is released when added to the bath or burned slowly.
