Vitamin D is important for immune health and muscle function. It also helps your body to absorb calcium, which is vital for strong bones and teeth.  

The recommended daily amount for adults and children over the age of one is 10mcg of vitamin D, including women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Infants under one need a daily amount of 8.5mcg.

There are two types of vitamin D: vitamin D2 is made by plants and vitamin D3 is produced by our skin from sunlight. Whilst our bodies need both types of vitamin, research shows that vitamin D3 is more important for our health and wellbeing; D2 on its own isn’t enough. Dietary sources of vitamin D3 are only found in animal products, so if you’re vegan and not exposed to much sunlight then you will need to take a supplement.
