Vegan Flapjacks

At Holland and Barrett, are proud to stock a fantastic selection of flapjacks, many of which are also suitable for vegans.

However, this has not always been the case. This is largely because the heritage British snack has traditionally relied on a LOT of butter to make them so moreish and delicious.

But, thanks to the surge in people turning to plant-based diets, we are happy to say that we not only now provide a great choice of vegan flapjacks, but they also come in a great range of delicious flavours, too!

What are flapjacks?

Flapjacks are a traditional sweet treat from Britain.

A tray bake, they are essentially the same as an oat bar, granola bar or muesli bar, except that purists will tell you that flapjacks are best when they are simply oats, butter (or some other type of fat), sugar (usually brown) and syrup (usually golden syrup).

Flapjacks can also be deeper and softer than a granola bar that you might find in the supermarket.

And you can add any number of additional ingredients to them, if you are baking at home, including nuts, seeds, dried fruit, spices and chocolate.

But, whatever they look like, and whatever extra ingredients they contain, a good flapjack should just melt in the mouth.

A note on oats

Oats start their lives as simple kernels of grain, which are then processed into a number of different varieties. These include rolled oats, jumbo oats, quick oats, steel cut oats and oatmeal.

Not only are oats natural, , low in sugar and high in fibre, but they are super-versatile.

You can use oats in a wide variety of baking or for a delicious and filling breakfast porridge.

They are perfect for protein balls, and you even make a milk substitute from them!

Vegan flapjacks

Vegan flapjacks have been harder to come by in the past, as one of the most delicious things about this oaty snack is how buttery they are.

And the taste of dairy butter has been hard to emulate.

But luckily for vegans, clever food technologists have figured out how to make deliciously buttery dairy-free flapjacks. And we are happy to say, we stock some of the best.

It is very easy to spot a bad flapjack. It usually starts with low-quality ingredients. So what should you look for in a good flapjack?

Well, let’s just say that starting with the ingredients list is a good idea.

A general rule of thumb is, the fewer ingredients the better (unless it is a bar packed with dozens of types of seeds and nuts!)
