I have a confession. As I write this, a letter inviting me for my NHS Health Check is sitting in the pile of ‘paperwork’ (actually parking tickets and school letters) on my kitchen worktop, waiting to be replied to. In fact, it’s the second time my GP surgery has sent it to me. It’s not good, is it? While I definitely will make that appointment, as editorial director of a health magazine, my own health should – obviously – be a non-negotiable priority.
We wanted to know where looking after your health fits on your to-do lists, and how well you know your own body. Not just if your jeans are a bit tight, but the numbers, like blood pressure and cholesterol, that you only learn at a medical check-up; plus how good you are at doing MOT stuff, like checking your breasts, and going for regular eye exams and cervical screening.
Nearly 1500 of you answered our Body MOT survey and, while, reassuringly, you’re generally better than I am at getting to the doctor’s promptly, there are key areas for improvement, too. Turn to page 30 find out the results – and how to swerve the health mistakes most of us make.
Our survey was also partially inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October – and to mark it, we’ve talked to three women about their very different experiences of the disease. Happy endings aren’t guaranteed, but you will definitely finish reading with a deeper understanding and appreciation of this most personal of battles.
