FAQs

What causes migraines?

It is unknown what exactly causes a migraine but it is thought that they are the result of abnormal brain activity, which temporarily affects chemicals, nerve signals and blood vessels within the brain.

Exactly what sets off a migraine is different for everybody, but some migraine triggers include changes in hormones, some foods, emotional triggers such as stress, anxiety and shock, tiredness, dehydration, loud noises and bright lights.

What does a migraine feel like?

A migraine usually feels very debilitating, with a throbbing or pulsing pain, which usually affects one side of the head.

Before a migraine starts, you may experience warning signs, or a migraine aura as it is known.

An aura may include flashes of light, blind spots or tingling on one side of the face or in your arms or legs.

As well as this, you might find it difficult to speak.

When an aura affects your vision, this is known as an ocular migraine or retinal migraine.

An aura can be a bit frightening if you have not experienced this before. But in most cases, they do not cause you any harm and they do not last for long.

You can also experience a migraine aura without headache, which is also known as a silent migraine.

This means that you may have specific migraine warning signs such as flashing lights but you do not go on to develop a headache.

What helps migraines?

During your migraine, you may find that lying in a darkened room, away from light and sound helps.

You may find that if you go to sleep, you will wake up feeling improved. Eating something can also help, especially if you have been sick or feel sick.

Holland & Barrett Feverfew Migraine Relief Capsules is a traditional herbal medicinal product, which can be used for the prevention of migraine headaches, based on traditional use only.

You can also use painkillers for migraine treatment.

What is a migraine?

A migraine is usually felt as a severe headache, which can give a throbbing or pulsing sensation and it usually affects one side of the head.

Some people may experience a migraine frequently, on as many occasions as several times a week, whereas other people may only have one very occasionally.

Years can pass between migraines. Some people never experience one at all.

How long do migraines last?

A migraine headache can be over in a couple of hours or it can last for a few days. The length of time it will last will vary from person to person, and from headache to headache.

They are often very painful and hugely inconvenient, as you are unable to go about your day as normal when you have a migraine.
