The antibacterial properties of New Zealand Manuka honey could be the natural, bacteria-bashing remedy that you’ve been looking for. We recommend discovering what Manuka honey is all about.

Manuka honey, such as this MGO 55-strength product from Manuka Doctor can be taken in a spoon, added to your meal or dissolved in water or perhaps a smoothie, and can even be applied to the skin. The natural antibacterial elements of the honey can alleviate sore throats and be applied to cuts and grazes.

The all-important MGO (Methylglyoxal) numbers on the bottle of Manuka Honey, apply to its antibacterial strength and it comes from DHA, a naturally present element in the nectar of the Manuka Bush. Within the hive DHA undergoes the Maillard reaction to form MGO.

100% certified by the New Zealand government, bees collect pollen mainly from an indigenous New Zealand plant known as the Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium), however the source of this product is ‘multifloral’ as bees often go further afield within the area and interact with other types of plants.

If you’re after hive-to-home honey that’s New Zealand approved and tested in the laboratory, then Manuka Doctor Manuka honey at Holland & Barrett comes highly recommended.

What does the MGO rating mean?

The MGO rating of manuka honey refers to the amount of MGO that the honey contains. The higher the number the more MGO it contains.

You may sometimes see a UMF factor referred to when talking about manuka honey.

This is another way to measure the MGO levels. At Holland & Barrett we only use the MGO rating.

Is manuka honey better than normal honey?

Manuka honey has stronger antibacterial properties than any other kind of honey.

Both manuka honey and regular honey are high in sugar, so they are best eaten as a natural replacement for refined white sugar wherever possible, rather than added as an extra to your diet.

Is manuka honey good for skin?

Thanks to its antibacterial properties, it is thought that manuka honey may help to soothe the skin and reduce sensitivity.

Manuka honey can be applied directly to the skin as a face mask and it is also added to various skincare products as an ingredient.

Smooth a thin layer of the honey onto your skin and leave for at least 15 minutes for best results.

How should you take manuka honey?

Manuka honey can be eaten in exactly the same way as normal honey.

Drizzle over Greek yogurt and berries, stir into your overnight oats or add to marinades to give meat, fish or vegetables a sweet, smoky flavour.

You can also use it as a natural alternative to white sugar in teas, coffees and in baking.

What is manuka honey good for?

Manuka honey contains MGO or methylglyoxal which gives it its antibacterial properties.

These properties mean that manuka honey can help to ease the discomfort of sore throats.

Simply stir some into warm water or tea. Or if you prefer, you can even eat it straight off the spoon as part of a healthy, balanced diet – Winnie the Pooh style!

What is manuka honey?

Manuka honey is a type of honey which gets its name from the Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium), which is indigenous to New Zealand.

Bees use the pollen from this plant to make their honey. When this plant is used for pollination, their honey is more potent than regular honey.

Manuka honey has become popular in recent years as an antibacterial food, as well as a hero ingredient in cosmetics.
