Whether you are planning to ramble in the Lake District, soak up the sun in Cornwall or catch some culture on a city break overseas, make sure you have all the summer essentials packed and ready to go.
Protect your skin
First things first, sun care. When we eventually do see the sun, we sometimes get so excited that we forget to take the best care of our skin. But it is important to remember to apply a good sun cream.
Not using sun cream can lead to sundamage and premature aging of the skin. Not to mention the red and very sore skin you can end up with from spending a day unprotected in the sun.
Apply liberally over any exposed areas of skin, being especially careful to pay special attention to those tricky areas such as underneath bikini straps. Remember to reapply every two hours, as well as after swimming.
And it is not just during summer that you need sunscreen. Ideally, you should add sun cream with an SPF of 30 or higher to your daily skincare routine year round, in order to protect the skin on your face from harmful UV rays.
Keep bugs at bay
There is nothing more irritating than a bug bite, especially when you have got your shorts on!
Bites are often itchy and can end up swollen and red.
Insects such as mosquitoes, midges, sand flies and horseflies can all cause trouble on your holidays so make sure you are fully equipped to keep bugs at bay.
Taking a vitamin D supplement is important all year round, even throughout the summer.
Sunlight in the UK is only strong enough to stimulate the production of sufficient vitamin D for our bodies for three to four months of the year.
During this time, you would need to be fully exposed to the sun without sun cream, for 20 to 30 minutes each day, to get all the vitamin D you need through sunlight.
And because of the risks to our skin from exposure to the sunlight without sun cream on, it is unlikely that you will be able to get all the vitamin D you need from the sun alone.
You should therefore continue to keep your levels topped up with a vitamin D supplement, even during the summer.
If you do not get to spend much time outside, it is especially important to do this.
If you have not applied sun cream as often as you should, then you could end up with sore, red skin.
Aloe vera can work well to soothe the skin. Aloe vera helps to support the skin after sun exposure, as well as keeping the skin hydrated, which ensures that the skin is less likely to dry out and peel.
Make sure you stay out of the sun and keep applying sun cream until the redness has completely gone.
A soothing gel such as aloe vera is the perfect way to get your skin feeling tip top again, especially if you have spent too much time in the sun.
Simply apply a thin layer of a gel such as Dr Organic Aloe Vera Gel 200ml to the affected skin and gently rub it in until it is fully absorbed. Repeat this as often as needed, to leave you with lovely, soothed skin.
If you feel like you need some extra cooling, then just pop your soothing gel in the fridge to keep it cool until you are ready to use it.
When children are running around on holiday they are bound to end up with a couple of marksand you might get some from running around after them!
