Far too often, snacking is a guilty pleasure which seems to threaten our health and fitness goals.
Here’s a look at a few healthy snack options which you can enjoy with a clear conscience:
- Frozen grapes – if you’ve got a sweet tooth and find yourself craving sugary snacks throughout the day, why not switch to frozen grapes? Grapes have a delicious creamy inner texture when frozen and are a refreshing treat to get you through the day.
- Apricots – apricots are a low-sugar fruit, with a single apricot containing just 3.5g of sugar. This makes them less likely to spike your blood sugar than other options. Apricots are also a great source of beta-carotene which can help improve eyesight and metabolic function, among other things.
- Pumpkin seeds – pumpkin seeds can be roasted and seasoned to create a delicious, crunchy snack. 100g of pumpkin seeds contain an impressive 19g of protein as well as being high in immune-supporting nutrients like magnesium and zinc.
- Hard boiled eggs – a single large egg contains about 6g of protein, along with a host of additional nutrients. These range from vitamin A, B6, B12, C, and D along with calcium, iron, and magnesium. Despite being high in dietary cholesterol, studies don’t appear to back up claims of eggs negatively affecting heart health.
- Dark chocolate – chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 60% or above has been linked with a variety of health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart attacks. This seems to be due to the high flavanol and procyanidin content of cocoa.
- Kale crisps – by lightly toasting kale leaves in the oven, with a drizzling of olive oil, you not only get to enjoy a crispy delicious snack, but also one packed with nutrients. Among other things, kale is a fantastic source of vitamin K, which studies suggest can improve brain function.
