5 foods for perfect skin this summer

If you want your skin to be in tip-top condition during the summer months, you need to use sunscreen several times a day to protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays, drink plenty of water to keep hydrated, and try to incorporate some skin-boosting foods into your diet.

Here are 5 of our favourite skin-boosting foods.

Avocados


To help prevent your skin and hair from becoming dry, try adding tasty avocado to your meals. This super fruit contains biotin, which is needed for healthy skin. Avocados contain close to twenty different vitamins and minerals, are low in sugar, and are a good source of fibre. They’re also high in monounsaturated fats (good fats).

They are a high calorie fruit so it’s recommended that you only have a 1/5th of a medium avocado per serving. If you’re not a big lover of eating avocado, it can be applied topically instead and still rejuvenate tired skin.

Berries


If you’re a fan of organic strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, you’ll be pleased to know that they’re great for your skin and hair. Berries are rich in vitamin C, which is needed for collagen production, anthocyanin which is believed to improve blood vessel function, vitamin K to protect your skin’s elasticity, as well as containing many more vital vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Whether you decide to grab a handful of your favourite berries to eat on the move or sprinkle some on your yoghurt, you’ll be in for a treat as berries taste at their best during the summer months.

Carrots

Next time you’re planning on eating some dips, ditch the tortilla chips and have carrot batons instead. Carrots are rich in beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, an essential vitamin for healthy skin. It helps protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays and repairs damaged skin.

Carrots also contain high levels of vitamin C and potassium, which help to stop skin drying out.

Celery


Low-calorie celery is also a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. When applied as a toner it can help remove excess oil from your skin, ideal if you have combination or oily skin. It can also help nourish your hair if you use it to make a homemade hair mask with almond oil.

Tomatoes


A salad staple, tomatoes contain lycopene which is believed to protect your skin from sunburn and keep your skin looking youthful. Lycopene absorbs more easily into the skin when tomatoes are heated, so you might want to try making some homemade tomato soup that you can eat hot. Other lycopene-rich foods include watermelons, red peppers, grapefruits, mangos and asparagus.
