There are no rules when it comes to exercising. Here’s how to get in shape without ever having a gym membership.
- Create your own outdoor circuits
You don’t need to go to a gym class or hire a Personal Trainer to get the benefits of an outdoor workout class. Design your own! All you need is some outdoor space (your garden or local playing field) and your own body weight. The ideal workout to do with a friend, your partner, or older kids.
- Enjoy a swim
Swimming is a lovely way to get fitter and stronger. There’s no need for membership, just pay as you go or get a book of tickets. Remember to pick up a timetable.
- Join a club
Find your local sports club and enjoy their friendly, weekly sessions. You’ll get fit, make friends, and learn some new skills. You can take it as far as you like.
- Get on your bike
Dust off the bike from your shed and take to the roads, trails, or local bike paths. Cycling is a great way to burn calories, tone up your legs, and see some interesting local sights.
- Step it up
Walking is a fantastic form of exercise. It's low impact, but benefits your heart, muscles, and mind whilst burning calories. Walk around your local town, or find new routes to explore the countryside.
- Sign up to a challenge
If you have a competitive streak, sign up to a fun challenge like an obstacle course race or mini triathlon. The goal will give you a focus and you’ll get seriously fit in the process. No gym required!
- Take up a sport
Revisit a sport you loved as a child, or learn something new. Most sports have specific initiatives aimed at welcoming returning or first-timer adult participants. Do you prefer team sports, martial arts, racket sport, endurance sport or something new altogether?
