We have pioneered the way when it comes to being mindful of the products we consume and apply to our bodies. Here at Holland & Barrett, we don’t just want to be ‘good for you’, but ‘good for our planet’ too. We understand that you want to know what goes into your beauty products and how they are made, so we work hard to ensure all of our ranges are made from simple, natural ingredients.
In return for using Mother Nature’s bounty, we want to help look after our environment too. From waste and energy to the products we sell and the suppliers we work with, we want to make our impact on the planet as small as possible.
We set ourselves the highest standards and follow strict rules and regulations to bring you innovative beauty products from around the world. From charcoal toothpaste and snail gel cream to seaweed masks and cacay oil, we offer ethical products that you’ll enjoy using time and time again.
Excluding harmful ingredients. Forever.
You’ll be assured to know that all of the products in our Natural Beauty range are free from microbeads (microplastics), SLS and SLES, and parabens. We are also proud to offer a number of ranges that are certified as cruelty free, meaning no animals are harmed in their production.
Caring for our oceans
We are proud to be the first national retailer to ensure all of our products are free from plastic microbeads. These are the tiny plastic balls used as exfoliators in some beauty products, such as face and body scrubs. However, at less than 5mm wide, they are small enough to pass through sewer water filters and end up in the sea. Here, they are at risk of harming sea creatures and ending up in the food chain.
Stamping out SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) and SLES (sodium laureth sulphate)
SLS, and its close relation SLES, are chemicals that have been added to beauty products for almost a hundred years to help create the foamy lather we expect from bubble bath and shampoo. However, in recent years, concerns have been raised that they could be harmful when mixed with certain ingredients and could cause irritation. Whilst many of these claims are yet to be fully proven, we have already taken the decision to go SLS and SLES free (just in case). We think it’s better to use natural alternatives to make those bubbles instead!
Saying no to parabens
Parabens are used to extend the shelf life of beauty products, such as sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, hair products, moisturisers, and mascaras. However, some studies have shown that these chemical compounds may interfere with your body’s hormones, with a possible link to breast cancer1. Although not scientifically confirmed, we have taken the step of banning parabens from all our products (again, just in case) and using natural alternatives instead.
Against Animal Testing
We ethically source all of our beauty ranges and are proud to offer many brands that are Leaping Bunny certified, which is the gold standard for non-animal tested consumer products. Therefore, you can have peace of mind when choosing your natural beauty products.
Here are just some of our Leaping Bunny brands:
We know that if you don’t want to eat animal products, then you probably don’t want to use anything that contains them either. That’s why we’ve sourced an extensive range of vegan-friendly (and animal-friendly) beauty products from like-minded brands.
We vow to continue to lead the way when it comes to promoting natural beauty products.
