Qualified to Advise

If you are taking supplements, take our advice.

Holland & Barrett associates are now officially 'Qualified to Advise'.

Our associates undergo a comprehensive training programme through the Holland & Barrett Natural Health Academy. The training programme is set-up to ensure our customers have access to clear, concise and up-to-date information to help them confidently make informed decisions about the products they may want to include in their nutritional supplement regime.

On successful completion of the intensive training programme, which typically takes 12 months to complete, associates attain a nationally recognised QCF qualification. What this means for you, the customer, is that you can take comfort in the knowledge that the advice you are given, by one of our thousands of qualified associates, has been validated with a nationally recognised qualification.

Qualified to advise Holland & Barrett store associates are able to advise customers and answer questions on a huge range of Holland & Barrett supplements, knowledgeably helping you to find the products you want.

Qualified to Advise

Over the last 9 months, we have been working on a project with the Government's Qualifications Department (Ofqual) to align our Holland & Barrett qualifications to nationally recognised qualifications. Our training programme is unique to Holland & Barrett and this qualification is specific to the health industry and products.

Our commitment to training is paramount to ensure we safeguard our industry and support our associates in delivering excellent customer care above that of other health retailers.

Completed on-the-job, associates achieve QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) credits on three levels, from a 6 week induction course through to 18 and 36 week training courses, with the later equivalent to an A Level.

Induction PA APA
Level 2 award worth 4 credits with a qualification in 'Principles of Holland & Barrett Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Health Products'.
Level 2 award worth 7 credits with a qualification in 'Understanding Holland & Barrett Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Health Products'.
Level 3 award worth 10 credits with a qualification in 'Understanding the application of Holland & Barrett Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Health Products'.

Each qualification is validated by EDI (Education Development International), a body accredited by the Government to award vocational qualifications.

More than 3,100 store associates have already completed the Natural Health Academy training and have been automatically awarded their qualifications.

Lee Constantinou (pictured above), store associate at the Holland & Barrett store in the West One Shopping Centre, has all the necessary tips and products to help get your fitness training underway.

"Adding lean muscle and keeping illness-free this winter is my focus, here are a couple of my tips to get you started"

"During the winter seasons most people exercising suffer from colds and flus more as their immune system is down due to the cold weather. Ensuring you have an adequate intake of Vitamin C will support the normal functions of your immune system during and after physical exercise.

For those looking to add some muscle this season, I recommend supplementing with a weight gainer supplement to ensure you're in a calorie surplus; consuming more calories than you burn. Combining this with resistance training will put your body in an anabolic (muscle building) state and support the development of lean muscle.".

Carmel Suffolk (pictured below), store associate at the Holland & Barrett store in Birmingham, has put together her top tips and product recommendations to ensure you keep that spring in your step."

"St. John's Wort is a perennial plant native to Great Britain, especially Wales, which bears bright-yellow petals in flowering tops. It is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms of slightly low mood and mild anxiety, based on traditional use only."

"Iron contributes to the formation of haemoglobin and red-blood cells and is necessary for the transport of oxygen in the body. It is also important in supporting the normal function of the immune system and is necessary for normal cognitive function. Iron can be found in eggs, fish, liver, whole grains and green leafy vegetables. It can also be taken in supplement form such as Holland & Barrett Iron Tablets with Vitamins and Minerals"

"Balancing blood sugar levels is key to supporting sustained energy. Eating frequently and combining protein with complex carbohydrate slows down the breakdown of carbs in your body. So essentially, the food that you have eaten spends more time in your stomach, leaving you feeling fuller for longer and making you less likely to reach for sugary snacks. The mineral chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels and macronutrient metabolism."

Case Studies

Carmel Suffolkfrom Pallasades store in Birmingham has worked for Holland & Barrett for an amazing 32 years. She told us the training gives her confidence to speak to customers about nutritional supplements. "I've always been good at the practical side of things, but not so much the theory" said 52 year old Carmel. "That's why when I left school with average grades I thought that was my lot. Being able to gain more qualifications whilst working has been a real bonus and something I never thought I'd be able to achieve, especially at 52! I feel that if you enjoy something you put more effort into it and the product training has given me the extra confidence to engage customers and discuss products they may wish to include in their nutritional supplement regime."
Lorna Rogers, 45, Manager of our Andover store is one of our double qualified members of staff, holding a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Cape Town. She told us "The APA training has complemented my university degree perfectly, it really is amazing the depth of subjects that's covered and the power it provides us to advise the customer. I've worked for Holland & Barrett for just over a year now and have learnt so much in that short time. I've been in retail since I was 18 and get a real buzz from talking to customers about the products we have to offer."
Kimberley Shipton is a Supervisor from our Edinburgh store who got 100 per cent results in our recent mystery shopping waves. "The training has been amazing, and something totally new to me" said Kimberly. "My University degree was totally different in Art and Design, so the science was new at first but now I'm really enjoying putting it into practice. I love retail, and have always worked part time in shops, but now I feel like I'm playing an important role everyday."
