Celery is one of the original ‘superfoods’, playing a staple part in diets all around the world. And with so many health benefits, it is easy to see why.

Celery contains antioxidants

Celery contains a range of different antioxidants, including:

  • Luteolin
  • Tannin
  • Saponin
  • And kaempferol1
Together, they help to remove free radicals, which are unstable atoms that damage cells.2 Celery also contains vitamin C and flavonoids.3 Vitamin C is essential for the immune system’s overall function and health4, while flavonoids have a similar function.4

Celery juice may help to lower cholesterol

Celery may be beneficial in lowering cholesterol because it pushes out the gut’s excess cholesterol compounds.5 Similarly, a study by the University of Chicago found that phthalide – a chemical found in celery – reduced bad cholesterol by 7% and blood pressure by 14%.6

While you may not see the benefits straight away, celery is an excellent addition to a healthy, long-term diet.

Celery can help promote normal digestion and overall gut health

Apiuman and other pectin-based polysaccharides have been found in celery.7

What this means is that celery can help to decrease the risk of stomach ulcers. It may also improve the quality of the stomach lining.

Similarly, celery is 95% water and contains both soluble and insoluble fibre, which bulks up and softens stools, signs of healthy digestion.

Celery aids with weight loss

When combined with a healthy, balanced diet, celery juice helps to promote fullness and makes a healthy alternative to high-calorie, sugary drinks.

Celery juice provides 85 calories per 475ml8, making it a low-calorie option that works well alongside a nutritious diet that incorporates a variety of other fruits and veggies.

One stick of celery contains:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K
  • Potassium
  • Folate

Try our easy celery juice recipe

This celery juice recipe is incredibly tasty – and best of all; it is so easy to make.

It only requires two ingredients: celery and water. If you fancy experimenting, you can add other ingredients, such as apple or ginger, to suit your taste.

However, to get all the health benefits of celery juice, keep it simple and serve it as it comes.

Drink it first thing on an empty stomach to feel the full celery benefits and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.


  • 1 bunch of celery (approximately 9 stalks)
  • ¼ cup of water

Equipment needed:

  • Juicer or blender


  1. Wash the celery thoroughly, to remove dirt and debris.
  2. Cut off the base and chop the celery up into large pieces, to make them easier to blend.
  3. Add the water and put the lid on the blender, making sure it is secure.
  4. Blend and serve.

If you prefer a thicker juice, simply reduce the amount of water. Similarly, add a touch more water to create a thinner, smoother drink.
