Celery – you either love it or hate it. But whatever your preference, there is no denying it is good for us!

This is perhaps why celery juice has become so popular in recent years.

It is more palatable than crunching on a celery stick, but far easier to incorporate into a healthy diet.

Plus, you can add other flavours to your celery juice to make it taste even better.

So, to help you on your way to celery juice success, we have got an easy recipe for you to try yourself at home.

Is celery good for you? What are the health benefits of celery?

Celery is one of the original ‘superfoods’, playing a staple part in diets all around the world. And with so many health benefits, it is easy to see why.

Celery contains antioxidants

Celery contains a range of different antioxidants, including:

  • Luteolin
  • Tannin
  • Saponin
  • And kaempferol1
Together, they help to remove free radicals, which are unstable atoms that damage cells.2 Celery also contains vitamin C and flavonoids.3 Vitamin C is essential for the immune system’s overall function and health4, while flavonoids have a similar function.4

Celery juice may help to lower cholesterol

Celery may be beneficial in lowering cholesterol because it pushes out the gut’s excess cholesterol compounds.5 Similarly, a study by the University of Chicago found that phthalide – a chemical found in celery – reduced bad cholesterol by 7% and blood pressure by 14%.6

While you may not see the benefits straight away, celery is an excellent addition to a healthy, long-term diet.

Celery can help promote normal digestion and overall gut health

Apiuman and other pectin-based polysaccharides have been found in celery.7

What this means is that celery can help to decrease the risk of stomach ulcers. It may also improve the quality of the stomach lining.

Similarly, celery is 95% water and contains both soluble and insoluble fibre, which bulks up and softens stools, signs of healthy digestion.

Celery aids with weight loss

When combined with a healthy, balanced diet, celery juice helps to promote fullness and makes a healthy alternative to high-calorie, sugary drinks.

Celery juice provides 85 calories per 475ml8, making it a low-calorie option that works well alongside a nutritious diet that incorporates a variety of other fruits and veggies.

While the celery diet might have had its day, celery is still here to stay.

Celery contains essential vitamins and minerals

One stick of celery contains:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K
  • Potassium
  • Folate

All are essential for keeping your body in check and functioning properly.

Celery is also low in sodium and GI, keeping blood sugar levels steady.9
