What is black cohosh?
This herbal remedy comes from a flowering plant closely related to the buttercup and it’s native to certain regions of North America.
Also known as bugbane or black snakeroot, it’s long been used as a natural remedy by Native Americans. Nowadays, black cohosh’s roots and rhizomes are a common active ingredient in many women’s health treatments – especially ones designed for people experiencing the menopause.
What is black cohosh used for?
As an herbal remedy, black cohosh is most well-known for being used:
- To treat the symptoms of menopause
It’s thought that black cohosh can act as a kind of phytoestrogen – a plant-based substance which works in a similar way to the hormone estrogen. Because of this, it’s often an ingredient in natural menopause treatments for women who have low levels of estrogen. Black cohosh is also licensed to relief symptoms of the menopause including hot flushes, night sweats, irritability and restlessness, based on traditional use only.
How much black cohosh should I take?
The amount of black cohosh used in over the counter tablets is standardised, with products manufactured to contain no more or no less than 6.5mg of the active ingredient – black cohosh extract. Why not try our traditional herbal remedy – Menocool Black Cohosh
