Maca

Also known as Peruvian ginseng, maca is a plant that is native to the Andean region of Peru.

It has a fleshy hypocotyl (the stem of a germinating seed) that fuses with a taproot, and it looks a lot like a parsnip.

The taproot is most often dried and turned into a flour or supplement, but it can also be cooked as you would any other root vegetable.

The root can actually come in a variety of colours; cream-yellow, half purple, totally purple, and black.

The cream-coloured roots tend to be bigger and sweeter, and are therefore grown more often. Black maca can be sweet and slightly bitter at once.

What can maca be used for?

Maca contains carbohydrates, and it is also a good source of protein (and 10-14%) and dietary fibre. It contains fatty acids and amino acids.

Consumers outside of Peru do not typically love its taste. Hence, many people prefer to consume it in supplement form.

Maca may help to increase energy levels, supporting mental and physical performance levels.

Other tips for increasing your energy levels

In addition to taking supplements like Maca, there are lifestyle changes and everyday things that you can also do to help increase your energy levels.

Eat breakfast

One key strategy to having increased energy levels throughout the day, is eating a balanced breakfast.

A lot of people skip breakfast, or down a coffee, and that’s it.

But a good breakfast can set you up nicely for the rest of the day. Eggs, yoghurt, nuts, seeds, and other sources of protein like fish and legumes are ideal.

Avoid too much caffeine

Then, throughout the day, try to avoid excessive consumption of caffeine, to the extent that you can, and stay hydrated.

You may take teas and coffees for a quick pick-me-up, but once that wears off, there can be an exhausting slump.

Keep hydrated throughout the day

Dehydration is another possible cause of tiredness. Even mild dehydration can affect your alertness.

Take regular exercise

Also important is getting in a lot of movement. Regular exercise can make you feel more energized.

That is one of the reasons it isn’t recommended that you exercise just before bed time.

Get some quality sleep

And this one may be obvious, but it still gets neglected.

On the other hand, a power nap can be a great way to combat brain overload zapping your energy.

Resting for 30 to 60 minutes can give you a new burst of energy, while also helping you to retain what you have learned prior to the nap.

Choose healthy, power snacks

Similarly, power snacks can also be a great pick-me-up. Opt for some protein, such as peanut butter on crackers or yogurt with nuts.

And if you do really want coffee, a latte can be a good option, because you will benefit from the protein and calcium in the milk.

Limit your alcohol and sugar intake

Drinking alcohol or eating sweet (read sugary) foods before bed can also disturb our sleep, and then the effects of that carry over to the next day.

Taking maca supplements
