Over eighty years ago in the tiny Swiss village of Laufen, Emil Richterich, a Master Baker, made his first batch of Ricola Original Swiss Herbal Lozenges, and to this day they stay true to that original recipe.
Where are Ricola lozenges made?
Each and every drop is made with 13 Swiss Alpine herbs that are grown high up in the Alpine areas of Switzerland – far away from traffic and pollution, so as to ensure the purity and quality of the herbs.
Every herb has unique requirements that need to be met if it is to become healthy and strong. This is why our cultivation methods are aligned with the various climates, sites and soil conditions.
In Emmental and the southern foothills of the Jura Mountains, acidic soil and relatively high rainfall create the ideal environment in which to grow peppermint crops.
Meanwhile, the warm, dry climate and light, stony soil in Valais and the Val Poschiavo valley – sometimes at altitudes of 1,000 metres above sea level – are ideal for the cultivation of sage and thyme.
Ricola has partnerships with over 100 farmers that grow the herbs especially for us, and they are all grown according to Swiss Bio standards, which include sustainable farming methods – in fact, we ban the use of insecticides and pesticides.
How are Ricola lozenges made?
Herbs have to be cultivated properly in order to experience their full flavour and intensity.
For us, plant cultivation is a cycle of activity that encompasses sowing the seeds, harvesting the crops, transporting the product and planting the fields again.

Transportation
After the herbs are harvested, we cannot afford to waste time.
We work quickly to transport the freshly cut herbs to our drying facility at our herb centre in Laufen.
We keep the transport routes short in order to conserve the active ingredients as effectively as possible.

Quality assessment
Only the best cut it at Ricola.
The herbs undergo a quality assessment to determine whether they meet our strict quality requirements in terms of freshness, colour, aroma, purity, content and active ingredient quota.
The herbs have to pass all of these tests before we use them.

Drying & storing
Over 1,400 tons of fresh herbs are processed at the centre each year.
After drying, they are cleaned, cut and stored.

Mixing
The herbs are transferred from the herb centre to the production facility via an underground tunnel.
The valuable active ingredients are extracted from the herbs at this facility.
The extraction process itself was designed by Ricola and is to this day top secret, as is the mixture itself.
It was developed to ensure that the intensive aromas and beneficial properties of the herbs are fully preserved.
Where can I find Ricola lozenges?
Over the years new flavours have been added to the range, and they are now known as Ricola Soothe & Clear; lozenges renowned for their soothing and clearing properties..
In the UK we not only sell “The Original” but also a Honey Herb variant, and a Honey, Lemon & Echinacea one that has added vitamin C and Lemon Juice.
The honey for both of these new variants is, as you would expect, from a company the like of Ricola - Fair Trade.
