8 top tips for clearer skin

How to get clearer skin:

  1. DO develop a good skincare routine - acne and blackheads are formed by a build-up of bacteria in our pores, so it’s key that you clear them out every day, particularly if you wear makeup

  2. DON’T pick your skin or pop any spots – as this may lead to scarring and put more bacteria on/in your skin8

  3. DO always wear an SPF - most doctors would recommend using a daily moisturiser that contains SPF to protect your skin from sun damage and drying out, as this can cause breakouts9

  4. DON’T overlook the importance of your skincare products - try to find products that are oil-free and noncomedogenic, meaning they don’t contain ingredients that will block your pores10

  5. DO make sure you’re not eating too much fat or sugar - it’s important to eat a diet packed with nutritious fruit and veg. Limit foods that are high in sugar and fat as they can stimulate your hormones and consequently cause your skin to produce an excess of sebum (oil).

  6. DON’T forget to choose your skincare products carefully - as a general guide, those with dry skin should use face care items that are moisturising and alcohol-free, while people with greasy skin need to avoid products that contain oil11

  7. DO use a gentle cleanser – instead of scrubbing your face with an exfoliator, as it can actually remove the natural oils in your skin that are vital for keeping it smooth and healthy12

  8. DON’T wash your skin in hot water - always use warm water, which is much kinder, especially if you’re doing it more than once a day13
