A practical guide to active ageing

At Face the Future, we believe in the concept of active ageing. The number on your birthday cake candles should never stop you from living out your life exactly how you want to. From staying physically, mentally and socially active, we believe that you should embrace your age and the ever-growing strength and wisdom that you cultivate as you spend more years travelling around the sun.

According to our recent survey conducted as part of our Beauty Beyond Time campaign, in the UK, nearly half (46%) of women feel some pressure to look young, yet a third (33%) say they’ve never used anti-ageing skincare products — a sign that many are rejecting unrealistic beauty expectations in favour of more empowering approaches to ageing. Which camp do you fall into?

Physical health and mobility

Feeling well starts from the inside out, and at Face the Future we believe in the power of self-care. Moving your body every day has a hugely positive impact on all areas of your wellbeing, from the physical to the mental.

Whether you go on a brisk walk, dance, go to a yoga class, follow a strength training programme, or another preferred form of exercise, choosing to stay active will boost your inner confidence. According to our survey, a third of women (32%) say they feel less confident compared to their younger years – so there’s work to be done.

Mental and cognitive wellness

Chasing external expectations and society’s judgements can be exhausting and instead, we recommend focusing on supporting your brain health and your mental wellness to improve your self image and confidence.

It isn’t all about beauty, but about your brains, too. Keeping your mind sharp and cultivating a sense of remaining curious can really elevate your internal energy.

Social engagement and purpose

According to Face the Future's Beauty Beyond Time survey, almost 1 in 3 women (27%) feel pressure to look young when dating — but deeper confidence often comes from shared values and presence, not appearance.

We’re on a mission to make you feel your best at the age you are right now, without desiring to turn back time, or to try and look younger than you are.

Keeping social, investing in your friendships and finding ways to be a part of your community are all super beneficial to how you will feel about yourself and your own mental wellness. In short, do not underestimate the power of human connection; it can make you feel as young as you’ve ever felt.

Nutrition and lifestyle

Instead of trying to fight ageing, instead focus on fuelling your body with an abundance of whole, nutritious food to help you feel your best. This, and staying hydrated, all whilst reducing high sugar and high fat foods, will act as your defences against ‘feeling old’. Your lifestyle will ultimately impact the amount of zest for life you have; prioritise your sleep and avoid habits that you know could be harmful to your health.
