How to build a routine that works

Implementing a skincare routine into your daily life will undoubtedly boost your inner confidence, your skin’s overall appearance. Experts at Face the Future are here to help support you on your skincare journey by offering you straightforward and honest advice that busts the myths and prevents you from becoming overwhelmed by all the products and information out there.

We believe that simple skincare is more effective, and following a consistent routine that works for you and your skin type will lead to the best results, and the best skin of your life.

Understanding your skin type

There are five basic skin types; normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. Here’s a quick rundown of each skin type, so you can start to assess your own skin and decipher which skin type you are.

Normal: Your skin is balanced in that it never feels overly oily or overly dry. You only experience the occasional breakout or blemish, and your skin isn’t overly reactive when using new products.

Dry: Your skin is consistently flaky with dry patches that are visible. It often feels taught and uncomfortable, and moisturiser tends to absorb fast into your pores.

Oily: Your skin is regularly shiny and produces oily visibly on the skin throughout the day and tends to need blotting to remove the excess oil. You experience blemishes and breakouts often or all the time.

Combination: Depending on your lifestyle, the seasons or your cycle, your skin can fluctuate between feeling dry to being oily, usually having a combination of both, where some patches are flaking due to dryness and some are shiny due to oil, such as on your T-zone.

Sensitive: Your skin is often red, sore and hot to the touch. You struggle to use actives regularly without your skin feeling uncomfortable and you may experience a burning or tingling sensation.

Still unsure what your skin type is? A good test for this is to examine how your skin feels in the morning when you first wake up. What do you see when you look in the bathroom mirror after just getting out of bed? If your skin looks shiny, you most likely have oily skin. If it looks dull and tight to the touch, you most likely have dry skin. Is there some redness or soreness? You most likely have sensitive skin. A mix of all the above? You may have combination skin. And if you have nothing much to report? You probably have a normal skin type. We can support you with discovering what your skin type is – just book in for a virtual consultation with one of our Skin Experts.

The core 3-step routine

So, where should you start? There are three core steps that every skincare routine should include, no matter what your skin type is. These are:

1. Cleanser: Cleansing your skin in the morning and on an evening is vital. This step ensures that you remove product buildup, excess oil, dead skin cells and general dirt from your skin.

2. Moisturiser: Every skin type needs hydration – yes, even if you have an oily skin type. A moisturiser keeps your skin hydrated and supports your skin barrier.

3. SPF (just in the morning): At Face the Future, SPF every day is non-negotiable. We recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ or higher to help provide  protection against UV radiation which can lead to skin damage.

Optional add-ons (once you're comfortable)

Once you have your basic skincare routine in place, you are ready to add in other steps to your routine to elevate it further and gain even better results.

We recommend:

  • Exfoliants: These are formulated with AHAs or BHAs to smooth your skin, unclog pores and remove dead skin cells.
  • Serums: can help target certain skin concerns, serums are usually specially formulated with key ingredients, such as Vitamin C for brightening, and Niacinamide for oil control.
  • Masks & Spot Treatments: Masks can help to give your skin an extra boost, and spot treatments target blemishes to help improve and even skin tone.

Every time you incorporate a new add-on product into your routine, we recommend that you patch test it first and introduce it slowly. Always read instructions carefully and read label before use.

Common mistakes to avoid

Like everything, learning what’s best for your skin will take time to fully understand, but there are some obvious mistakes that you really should try and avoid. Firstly, over exfoliating your skin can lead to all sorts of issues, so make sure you only exfoliate once or twice a week to help protect your skin barrier.

You should also be super careful when it comes to mixing acids as this can lead to your skin reacting in a damaging way. If you’re unsure, it’s best to get professional advice from a dermatologist or specialised Face of the Future expert. And the biggest skincare faux pas of all: ignoring SPF.

If you’re going to make sure you do one positive thing for your skin every day, it should always be to apply SPF. That's why we have a range of sunscreens ready for you to purchase, including Heliocare, Hello Sunday, Altruist and Ultrasun
