A family chai recipe, passed down through three generations.
This isn’t a chai recipe created in a development kitchen.
It’s the masala chai I grew up with.
The recipe was passed down from my grandma to my mum, and then from my mum to me. It’s the chai we make at home: strong Assam black tea blended with fragrant cardamom, warming cinnamon and ginger, fennel, star anise, cloves and a touch of black pepper.
Now I’ve put our family blend together for you, so making a proper cup of masala chai at home is a little easier.
Rich, aromatic and beautifully spiced, our Masala Chai Loose Leaf Tea can be simmered traditionally with milk and water for a comforting, creamy chai or brewed as a fragrant spiced black tea.
✓ A real family recipe
Passed from grandma to mum to me.
✓ Made with Assam black tea
A robust, full-bodied black tea that stands up beautifully to milk and spices.
✓ Eight simple ingredients
Black Assam tea, cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, star anise, cloves, ginger and black pepper. No flavourings.
✓ Loose leaf masala chai
See the tea and spices you’re actually brewing. Makes for a wonderful ritual.
✓ Make it your way
Enjoy traditionally simmered with milk or brew as a spiced black tea.
✓ No need to measure individual spices
We’ve already blended the tea and spices together for you.
Our blend brings together:
Assam Black Tea — rich, malty and full-bodied.
Cardamom — intensely aromatic with a distinctive sweet, fragrant character.
Cinnamon — brings natural warmth and gentle sweetness.
Ginger — adds that unmistakable warming chai kick.
Fennel — subtly sweet and aromatic.
Star Anise — adds a distinctive liquorice-like spice note.
Cloves — deep, warming and fragrant.
Black Pepper — a subtle peppery finish that rounds out the spices.
The result is a bold, aromatic loose leaf masala chai where you can actually taste the tea as well as the spices. I have added so so many spices so that this tea tastes authentic as it should rather than being another gimmick/trend with a fancy name.
For me, chai has never just been a drink.
It’s part of home.
My grandma made her own masala chai blend and passed the recipe to my mum. My mum then passed it down to me, and it’s the chai I still prepare at home today.
Every family has its own way of making chai. Ours combines strong Assam tea with cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, star anise, cloves, ginger and black pepper.
Rather than reaching for each individual spice every time you fancy a cup, I’ve blended them together so you can recreate our family’s chai ritual in your own kitchen.
Three generations. One chai recipe. Now shared with you.
