Manuka Pharm Manuka Honey MGO 40
Created by bees that forage on New Zealand’s leptospermum scoparium, or manuka bush, manuka honey is big news on the alternative health scene. With a distinctive flavour and antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, it is pretty special stuff, but is the manuka honey price point really worth it?
Produced by hives in wild, uncultivated areas, true manuka honey, such as Manuka Pharm’s multifloral MGO 40 honey, has been employed by indigenous Maori people for thousands of years.
Some of those traditional uses are now backed by scientific studies. So while it is more expensive than your average supermarket honey, manuka is equally comparable to local honey.
A delicious alternative to table sugar, manuka honey is great stirred into a cup of tea, perfect for drizzling over yoghurt and soothing when blended with hot water. But it is not just suitable to eat: many people choose to harness manuka’s properties by using it topically.
Manuka honey for skin and hair care
One of manuka honey’s most popular uses is in skincare. Because of its high sugar concentration Manuka Honey is known to keep the skin hydrated, soften the skin.
Blended with oats, yoghurt or avocado, manuka can make a highly effective face mask.
Alternatively, it can be watered down for use as a homemade cleanser.
In addition manuka also has plenty to offer your hair. A natural humectant and emollient, honey can support luxuriant, smooth and frizz-free hair and a comfortable scalp.
Manuka, the ultimate food?
An antimicrobial, manuka honey bravely stands up to microorganisms, including bacteria, parasites and fungi.
Popularly used to help soothe sore throats, manuka can also offer benefits for other parts of the body too. A source of fructose which leads to lower blood glucose rises compared to foods containing sucrose and glucose.

Manuka honey specialists Manuka Pharm work alongside the New Zealand government to ensure only the best and most pure manuka reaches Holland and Barrett’s shelves.
Packed and sealed in NZ, all Manuka Pharm honey bears the New Zealand government’s seal of approval.
Testing and grading are carried out on every jar of manuka. This testing ensures you receive the best manuka honey, genuine and pure.
The manuka honey UMF, or unique manuka factor, rating reflects the amount of MGO in a jar of manuka, giving you an indication of how potent your honey is.
MGO is short for methylglyoxal. This is the ingredient that is thought to make MGO honey more potent than other types, giving it its antibacterial properties. The higher the MGO of your honey, the more powerful it is believed to be.
You have probably noticed that Holland and Barrett manuka honey is a lot more expensive than other honeys.
In fact, this is true of all manuka honey. Manuka tends to cost more because there is so much involved in the process of getting it to you.
Manuka trees only grow at altitude in remote, unspoilt areas of New Zealand. Set in these difficult to access areas, manuka beehives often have to be lifted in and out of farmland by helicopter.
Add to this is the fact that manuka blooms for just two to eight weeks each year and that it is easily impacted by inclement weather conditions and manuka’s reputation as ‘liquid gold’ makes complete sense.
Manuka honey also goes through rigorous (and pricey) testing to ensure its purity, providing a manuka honey MGO and UMF accreditation for each jar.
Unlike most of the honey you will find in the supermarket, manuka goes through very little processing before it finds its way to your kitchen cupboard.
This is just one of the reasons it is so popular with raw food enthusiasts.
Because it remains in its untreated state, manuka tends to maintain some compounds that are lost to heat treating in other honeys.
Manuka also contains three chemicals – MGO, DHA and Leptosperin - all thought to have positive effects on our wellbeing.
There is no conclusive scientific evidence of this. However, many people believe the purity of manuka makes it more beneficial than your usual homegrown honey.
Made by bees who forage on the native New Zealand scrub plant, Leptospermum scoparium, manuka honey is considered more potent than the honey produced by our own UK honey bees.
Raw manuka honey is touted for its natural antibacterial properties, as well as its rich, delicious flavour.
