Ingredient integrity

What goes into our products matters

When we recommend something to support your health, we want to know what goes into it – and where those ingredients come from.

For Holland & Barrett own-brand products, ingredient integrity brings together scientific evidence, regulatory compliance, quality and responsible sourcing. We consider them together throughout product development, helping us create products we can stand behind.

How we assess our ingredients

Backed by science

Every formulation starts with a health need. Our teams review the scientific evidence behind ingredients and formulations, including the levels of active ingredients used. Our in-house Science team includes nutritional scientists, dietitians and pharmacists who help safeguard the scientific integrity behind what we do.

Quality and regulatory standards

Science is only one part of the picture. Regulatory review and quality testing matter too. From defining the health need and reviewing the evidence to formulation, quality testing and ongoing review, our products are considered at every stage. Together, these checks help us make sure our own-brand products meet the standards we expect before they reach you.

Responsibly sourced

Where an ingredient comes from matters too. We consider sustainability, supply-chain risk and human rights alongside science and quality. Higher-risk ingredients get a closer look, with credible certifications prioritised and lower-impact alternatives considered where appropriate.

From farm to shelf

Many of the ingredients in our products are natural or linked to agriculture, which means understanding where and how they're sourced is an important part of ingredient integrity. Our Responsible and Ethical Sourcing Programme helps us understand and manage risks within the supply chains behind our products.

  • 100% of Holland & Barrett branded suppliers were required to meet our Supplier Code of Conduct in our 2024-2025 reporting year.

  • 100% of our direct suppliers, sellers, service providers and international partners were assessed using a risk-based approach in our 2024–2025 reporting year.

To support our supplier checks, we use responsible sourcing platforms including Sedex and Authenticate, alongside independent third-party audits.

Improving ingredient traceability

Some ingredients need closer attention because of where and how they're produced. We're continuing to map higher-risk ingredients across our portfolio, helping us improve traceability and responsible sourcing.

For some of our higher-risk ingredients, our latest reported progress includes:

  • 98% of mapped palm oil reported as RSPO-certified

  • 97.7% of soy are verified as deforestation-free

We're also expanding our traceability and certification work across other priority ingredients, including fish oil, with certifications such as Friend of the Sea and the Marine Stewardship Council helping support responsible sourcing.

Protecting the people behind our products

Ingredient integrity also means considering the people throughout our supply chains. Our approach to human rights is guided by internationally recognised standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and International Labour Organisation conventions.

Supplier audits look at areas such as working conditions, health and safety, worker rights and responsible recruitment. If issues are identified, we work with suppliers to address them and help prevent them from recurring.

Ingredient integrity in action: Mānuka honey

For ingredients like Mānuka honey, authenticity and traceability are particularly important.

In 2024, we completed our first Human Rights Impact Assessment of our own-brand Mānuka honey from New Zealand, helping us strengthen transparency and identify opportunities for improvement across the supply chain.

When questions were raised publicly about the authenticity of some Mānuka honey products in 2025, we worked with suppliers and testing partners to verify the quality, authenticity and traceability of our own-brand Mānuka honey.

Why ingredient integrity matters

What goes into a product matters. So does where it comes from and the standards behind it. That's why we bring science, quality, regulation and responsible sourcing together, helping us stand behind the ingredients and products we recommend. And as science, regulation and expectations evolve, we'll keep strengthening our standards too.
