- 5-HTP is the shortened name for L-5 hydroxytryptophan. This is a compound that our body synthesises from the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in seeds, eggs, salmon, and turkey, and is used to make the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) cannot be sourced from the diet.
