While honey contains all the sugars that bees need, pollen provides them with a high source of proteins, vitamins, minerals and amino acids for nourishment. The pollen is then distributed to different parts of the hive and stored in honeycomb. An experienced beekeeper can sometimes tell which flowers the bees have been visiting!
Bees collect pollen in pollen sacks attached to their back legs - sitting by the hive on a nice day you can often see their colourful pollen-filled sacks as the bees fly back to the hive.
Picklecoombe House is a working Apiary based in Leicestershire, and specialises in honey and honey products from all over the world.
