According to the NHS, the Department of Health recommends that children from six months to five years old are given vitamin supplements containing vitamins A, C and D every day, particularly those who don’t eat a varied diet.1
Many over-the-counter supplements contain other vitamins and ingredients, so it’s a good idea to speak to your pharmacist supplements and which would be most suitable for your child.
Keep in mind that having too much of some vitamins can be harmful, so it’s important to keep to the recommended dose on the label.2
We’ll explain more as we go through.
Read on to find out what vitamins children need.
Your and your child’s main source of vitamin D comes from sunlight on the skin.
Yet it’s important to keep your child covered up and protected from the sun, and with few foods containing vitamin D it can be difficult to ensure that your child is getting the right amount.
The Department of Health suggests that babies from birth to the age of one who are being breastfed should be given a daily vitamin D supplement, whether you are taking a vitamin D supplement yourself or not.3
However, babies who are having more than 500ml (around a pint) of infant formula a day, should not be given supplements as formulas contain vitamin D and other nutrients.4
Children aged between 1 and 4 should be given a supplement containing 10µg per day.

Vitamin A is really important for you and your child’s immune system.
It’s found in a variety of foods such as green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach and cabbage, other veg like carrots, sweet potato and swede, you’ll also find it in dairy products and fortified spreads.
It helps keep you and your skin healthy, and can even help to maintain normal vision.
It’s recommended that supplements containing vitamin A are suitable for babies and children aged 6 months to 5 years old.
Unless, as above, your child is getting more than 500ml of infant formula per day.5
Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for both you and your children. It’s necessary for the healthy functioning of the body.
Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C isn’t something the body stores so it’s important your child gets enough to help skin, bones and cartilage, supporting the immune system and it also helps your body absorb iron.6
It’s found in lots of fruit and vegetables, particularly fruits and leafy green veg.
Again, the department of health recommends taking vitamin C as a supplement for children from 6 months to 5 years old.
The need for vitamins is the same with adults and children, however the dosage required by children will be less.
For example, if an adult was to take children’s multivitamins – they would find the levels of vitamins and nutrients insufficient, unless of course they have been advised to by a medical professional.7
As per NHS guidelines, children aged between 6 months and 5 years old should take a daily supplement that covers vitamins A, C and D.
Generally speaking, all three need the same kinds of vitamins. However, the dosage needed increases as they get older, which is why it’s important to buy vitamins specifically made for each age group.
We'll take a look at what might be suitable, should you choose to invest in a multivitamin for your children.

The department of health recommends that babies and infants from the age of 6 months to 5 years take a vitamin supplement which covers vitamin A, C and D – particularly if your child is a fussy eater.
It is possible for your child to get enough of these through a well-balanced, healthy diet. However, it can be difficult particularly with vitamin D that we get from sunlight when looking to protect your child from sun damage.
There are many supplements on the market to pick from, we’ve just chosen a few that may be appropriate. You can check out the full range by using the link below.
