Whether you’re serious about your coffee or just rely on a quick mug to get you going, you’ve probably seen mushroom coffee cropping up everywhere. Before you picture a mug full of supermarket mushrooms, hear us out. Mushroom coffee is less about drinking mushrooms in your brew and more about blending mushroom extracts into your usual cup.

On TikTok, it’s often positioned as an alternative to a standard flat white, with fans claiming it offers the ritual of coffee but with extra ingredients. Curious about making the switch? Here’s everything you need to know – and the blends worth trying if you want to see what the fuss is about.

What are the benefits of mushroom coffee?

The idea behind mushroom coffee is simple: to switch our usual coffee with a lower- or no-caffeine coffee and mushroom blend. These drinks tend to contain half the caffeine content of your regular Americano, and common varieties you’ll often find whizzed into drinks and powders include chaga, reishi, lion’s mane and cordyceps.1

That said, while there’s emerging research on mushrooms themselves, studies specifically looking at mushroom coffee benefits remain limited – partly because it’s still a relatively new product category.2,3 But the buzz around these funghi-fuelled brews shows no signs of slowing down right now – especially on TikTok, where fans rave about lion’s mane lattes and chaga cappuccinos over their usual espresso.

Mushroom coffee FAQs

Does mushroom coffee actually taste like mushrooms?

No! Mushroom coffee tastes way more like regular coffee than you'd expect, maybe with a slightly earthier note. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how familiar and drinkable it is.

Is mushroom coffee high in caffeine?

It's got about half the caffeine of regular coffee, typically around 45-70mg per cup compared to 95-140mg in your usual brew.1 This makes it perfect if you want to dial down your caffeine intake without giving up your coffee ritual completely.

Can I drink mushroom coffee every day?

Most people can absolutely enjoy mushroom coffee daily – but as with anything new, start gradually and see how your body responds.
